According to data released in 2011 by the California Department of Education, “about 41 percent of Vallejo high school students dropped out during the four-year period ending with the 2009-10 school year. The same data also shows about a 50 percent graduation rate.” In efforts to improve the high school dropout rates, the Summer of Success Youth Enrichment Camp provides students not only supervision, but keep children’s minds active over the summer months, kids active, builds confidence and a positive attitude, allows youth to explore new interests and serve families as well.
The Summer of Success Youth Enrichment Camp is a two-week camp held during the 2nd week of July from the hours of 8am to 3pm where they are served free breakfast and lunch each day through the Vallejo City Unified School Districts Free-lunch program.
Students spend 2 hours each morning focusing on math and language arts. Upon entering the camp, students are administered a Pre-Test to determine where they le academically. Credentialed Teachers then focus their lesson plans on helping to ensure students are brought up to grade level or exceed grade level. The final days of camp students are then administered a post-test to determine what successes have been made.
This camp is free and available to youth entering *1st through 12th grades.
The program is in partnership with the Vallejo City Unified School District and community-based organizations. Through the program, Students are offered academics, life skills, sports, creative arts, career and writing skill development.
In addition to the academic focus, students are also provided introductions to different careers including those in the STEM field. In past years students have been provided opportunities to visit PayPal, Google, and CalTrans. The visits allow students the opportunity to learn more about careers in STEM and provide them with a hands-on view of what these careers look like. Other field trips have included a visit to the Solano County Courthouse on a tour with the presiding judge to learn the details of his/her job,
At the conclusion of the program, students host a program for their families to showcase what they have learned during the two weeks, as well as performances by the students.
